What does ESG mean for your as an SME?
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance.
It includes how an organization deals with environmental, social, and corporate governance issues.
ESG is important for all organizations, including SME's, because it indicates how sustainable and responsible an organization is.
ESG and SME's
More and more consumers, investors and other stakeholders are interested in the ESG performance of organizations and are choosing to buy from, or invest in, companies that perform well on ESG. This can lead to financial benefits for companies that score well on ESG, such as a lower cost of capital and a better image. Therefore, it is important for SMEs to be aware of their ESG performance and ensure that they operate in a responsible manner.
Examples of ESG-KPI's
There are several examples of ESG KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) that SME's can use to measure their ESG performance. KPI's are specific measurable targets that help measure and track a company's performance.
An example is the number of tons of CO2 emissions of a company. Another example is the share of renewable energy sources in its energy supply.
Still other examples are:
- Average waste reduction per employee per year
- Percentage of recycled materials in products
- Percentage of utilization of sustainable means of transportation for business travel
- Number of trainings and workshops on sustainability offered to employees
- Percentage of local and sustainable suppliers in purchasing processes
- Average time employees spend on sustainable projects outside their regular work
- Percentage of products and services focused on sustainability
- Number of partnerships with sustainable organizations and initiatives.
ESG and POWER BI
Power BI is a tool that can help SMEs measure and visualize their ESG performance. It provides a user-friendly interface that allows companies to track and present their ESG KPIs to stakeholders, such as investors and customers. This makes it easier for SMEs to be transparent about their sustainability performance and show that they are working to improve it.
A practical example of an ESG KPI is reducing carbon emissions. For example, an SME may have a target to reduce CO2 emissions by 5% per year. Power BI can be used to track and visualize the company's progress. This can be done, for example, by creating dashboards that show the company's CO2 emissions over time, and by comparing them to the emissions of other companies in the same sector.
